Metaphysical Poets

  • The era was between the 16th and 17th centuries, eventually falling to Romanticism.

  • Focused on the philosophical discussion of spirituality, with a large focus on the Christian God in particular.

  • While most approach the subject of God from a theological point of view, often using the Bible for support, the Metaphysical Poets approached the subject from a logical and reasonable point of view.

 

Metaphysical Poets

  • The most recogized among the poets was John Donne, who discussed many important contemporary topics including sexual realism and psychological analysis – against the conservative views of their religion.

  • Other poets include John Milton, Richard Crashaw, Henry Vaughn and Abraham Cowley.

  • 9 December 1608 – 8 November 1674

  • Wrote against a corrupt church

  • Wrote the epic Paradise Lost  and its continuation Paradise Regained
